This antique box was once used to transport fine clothing for the Detmer Woolens Company. Started in 1885, the company was known throughout the US as a maker of woolen garments. A fire destroyed their offices in 1908, leading to an eventual move from the Parker building to the Loft Building at the foot of 37th Street in Brooklyn. Julian Detmer retired from the woolens business in 1935 and would go on to create the Detmer Nurseries.
This box measures 28"W x 11"D x 8" in height when closed. When open for display the box is 19" in height. This piece would be an excellent addition to any collection in a fine garment shop.
