c. 1860s-1870s; manufactured by A. & D. H. Chambers (Pittsburgh) for Sass & Hafner (Chicago)

A well-preserved deep blue aqua mineral water bottle from the 1860s-1870s, crafted by A&D H.C. in Pittsburgh for Chicago's Sass & Hafner bottlers. Emblazoned on the front is the slightly worn inscription, "Sass & Hafner / Chicago."

Lewis Sass and William Hafner initiated their bottling venture in 1866, initially focusing on mineral water at 112 W. Lake. Transitioning to soda water manufacturing at on Lake St. by 1867, they briefly handed over operations to Charles Schriber in 1868. Yet, they continued solo soda water bottling until 1874 before diversifying into ale and porter until 1876. Relocating to N. Peoria, they resumed soda water production until 1881, when Hafner departed to join Hartt Manufacturing Company. Sass persevered, partnering with a new partner to form Sass & Pomy in 1883, continuing their bottling legacy at the same N. Peoria location.

Exhibits minor signs of wear, but much of this is cosmetic and the bottle is relatively free from chips.

2.5" dia and 7" H
